Wodonga has decided to reel in its Commonwealth Games Jamaican fish!
The steel yellow-tailed snapper that represented Jamaica in the Games opening ceremony is expected to arrive in Wodonga by the end of next week. Mayor Cr Lisa Mahood said Council was thrilled that the giant fish sculpture would soon be on display in Wodonga. “We have received a generous offer of support from Wodonga TAFE that will see us working in partnership to bring the fish to Wodonga and put it on show,” Cr Mahood said. Council inspected the fish in Melbourne last Thursday, June 1, with Councillors agreeing on Monday to give the go-ahead to bringing the fish to Wodonga. The City of Wodonga sent an expression of interest to the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne for the sculpture because of the relationship it built with the Jamaican team during the Games. Staff from Wodonga TAFE’s National Logistics and Industrial Training Centre will use its own transport to collect the fish sculpture from Melbourne. The fish will be first taken to the TAFE, where metal fabrication apprentices and other students will carry out works to bring it up to the standards required to put it on display. Wodonga TAFE Chief Executive Officer Denise O’Brien said the TAFE was delighted to be able to partner the City of Wodonga in a project that had created such a great deal of interest in the city. “We are particularly interested in working with the city and actually look at opportunities where we can use our resources to support something like this,” she said. “In the case of the Commonwealth Games fish, that means helping out with transport and then metal fabrication to ensure the fish is in the very best condition possible for the city’s residents to enjoy.” Cr Mahood said the fish would not be unveiled until it was placed on display at the Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre. “This is very much a shared partnership between Wodonga TAFE and the City of Wodonga,” she said. “It is wonderful knowing that some of our talented young apprentices will be playing their part in putting the fish on show in Wodonga.” End.
