Skills Recognition

What does this mean? Skills Recognition is an 'umbrella'  term used at Wodonga TAFE to formally acknowledge skills, abilities and knowledge obtained through previous study, work experience and/or life experiences. Skills Recognition is an assessment process where your skills or prior learning are formally measured against the outcomes set for the course in which you are enrolling.

This acknowledgement includes:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL acknowledges that people learn in many different ways and that learning may have been through a combination of work experience, education, training, and/or life experiences. With RPL, your skills, training and/or experiences are assessed against the requirements of the units of competency or modules.
  • Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). RCC applies if a client has previously successfully completed the requirements for a unit of competency or module, and is now required (for example, by a licensing authority) to be reassessed to ensure that the competence is being maintained. In this case, no extra skill or competencies are nationally recognised.
  • Credit Transfer (CT). Formal study that you have already completed can be used as evidence for Credit Transfer. To be valid, the study must have been accredited (for example, from a school, university, another TAFE or other registered provider of vocational education and training programs).

Skills Recognition provides identification of the competencies you have already gained. Through the processes of RPL, RCC or CT, people are not required to undertake training in areas where they are already competent. This can save you time and money and your existing skills can be formalised against a qualification. You get the credit you deserve.

At Wodonga TAFE we have developed a Recognition process aimed at making it quick and simple and cost effective. At the same time we will provide a process that is valid, reliable and authentic. Wodonga TAFE invites you to explore your Recognition options. Click here for the Skills Recognition Information Guide, which also contains information about fees and charges: (PDF 513 kb).
